Take a look at Gmelius. My team created it to help teams collaborate and communicate efficiently while managing projects and clients directly from your Gmail inbox.
This article explains in detail what makes Gmelius a good alternative to Google Groups [ https://gmelius.com/blog/best-alternative-to-google-groups ].
If you're looking for something super simple then http://gaggle.email is a really nice group email list provider with a clean UI. I've used it for a residents association list that I maintain, it's not as functionally complete as Google Groups but for a simple email list it works well.
Google groups is amazing at sharing information and one can directly communicate with the participants of the group. But when it comes to team collaborations then it has a major drawback
If a new person joins the group he cannot have access to the previous email conversations, so there are great chances of missing out important information or updates. Email delegation was another big issue with google groups.
Recently I came across an application by Microsoft I,e Microsoft Kaizala, which serves as a social media platform for knowledge sharing, it has several groups of various niches. there are three ways to join a group on Kaizala, one is by entering the code generated and shared by admin , second method is the QR Scan , first two are so obvious , I was so amazed when I saw a search option wherein you can search and join groups which are nearby inshort you can search and join groups which are nearer to your location. Microsoft Kaizala can increase team productivity as you can assign tasks to your team members and can keep a track of team activities
There is now a free service at Group List.
* Works with any email provider * Easy to setup and use (just send an email to * ) * Free for up to 200 recipients * Announcement or discussion list options * Set how replies are handled Try it out here: Add Group List - GroupList.io [ https://grouplist.io/setup/add-group-list/ ]
Yahoo groups are also similar, but next generation platform like Google community and Facebook Groups are becoming more popular.
Check out Fiesta [ https://www.quora.com/topic/Fiesta ] - https://fiesta.cc - our web UI is still in beta but it's hopefully a big improvement, and whole archive export is coming soon too.

People often under estimate the power of Google search engine. Therefore, I decided to take a bit different approach answering this question. I searched the exact same question “What are google groups” on Google and took a screenshot of the first result shown. This is the result:
I hope that answers your question. Please try searching your questions on Google first. This way, you can save a lot of time and learn more about browsing the internet. Thankyou.
Google Groups has not become obsolete. Google has never talked about sunsetting this product and I’ve not seen any other reference to obsolescence apart from this Quora question.
Google’s Google Plus product was seen by some as a Groups replacement but that was a misguided view and in January 2019 Google announced that they were sunsetting Google Plus for consumer accounts (GSuite accounts will continue to support Google Plus).
I manage a number of Google systems and I use Google Groups extensively to help manage communication and information sharing.
Google Groups will be with us for some time yet.
