nonviolent communication

Summary

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a spiritual practice that helps us see our common humanity and use our power in a way that honors everyone's needs. 1 It is based on historical principles of nonviolence and is used to create a path for healing and reconciliation in its many applications. 1 Through the practice of NVC, we can learn to clarify what we are observing, what emotions we are feeling, what values we want to live by, and what we want to ask of ourselves and others. 1 It is not a technique to end disagreements, but rather a method designed to increase empathy and improve the quality of life of those who utilize the method and the people around them. 2 It is available in paperback and Kindle eBook formats, and is written by experts in the field to help readers create healthier relationships. 3 The Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing NVC around the world. 4 “Our survival as a species depends on our ability to recognize that our well-being and the well-being of others are in fact one and the same”. 5

Nonviolent Communication evolved from concepts used in person-centered therapy, and was developed by clinical psychologist Marshall Rosenberg beginning in the 1960s and 1970s. There is a large ecosystem of workshops and clinical materials about NVC.
