Hyoscyamine is a naturally occurring tropane alkaloid and plant toxin found in certain plants of the family Solanaceae, including henbane, mandrake, angel's trumpets, jimsonweed, the sorcerers' tree, and deadly nightshade. 1 It is used to treat a variety of stomach and intestinal problems such as cramps and irritable bowel syndrome, bladder and bowel control problems, cramping pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and Parkinson's disease. 2 Hyoscyamine works by decreasing the motion of the stomach and intestines and the secretion of stomach fluids, including acid. 3 Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, decreased sweating, decreased urination, blurred vision, rash, decreased sense of taste, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headache, sleep problems, impotence, loss of interest in sex, and trouble having an orgasm. 4 5
