Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound with the formula H2O2, used as an oxidizer, bleaching agent, and antiseptic, usually as a dilute solution (3%–6% by weight) in water for consumer use. 1 2 It is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. 1 It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation. 1 Hydrogen peroxide can be used as an alternative to bleach for disinfecting and cleaning 3 , and to remove germs and pesticides from fruits and vegetables. 3 It can also be used in the laundry room to bleach clothes and remove stains. 3 Hydrogen peroxide is not recommended for use on pets 4 , and there is no scientific evidence to support its use for health purposes. 4
