Its eastern border with Contra Costa County generally follows the ridge of the Berkeley Hills, a range of the Pacific Coast Ranges that overlook the northeast side of the valley that encompasses San Francisco Bay, bounded by the major Hayward Fault along their western base and the minor Wildcat fault on their eastern side. The 2020 census recorded a population of 124,321 in Berkeley.
