Summary

Most AV receivers have two main surround sound modes: Direct/Straight, or Pure Direct mode, which is meant for listening without any alteration from the receiver, and fancier DSP modes for more experimental users. Some DSP modes, such as 7-channel Stereo or All-Channel Stereo mode, can bring a lot of sound to the theater. However, most of the other DSP surround modes, such as Jazz Club and Cathedral, are not recommended for regular home theater use. 1 2
