Acetaminophen is used to relieve mild to moderate pain from headaches, muscle aches, menstrual periods, colds and sore throats, toothaches, backaches, and reactions to vaccinations, and to reduce fever. 1 2 It is also used to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis. 2 Acetaminophen comes as a tablet, chewable tablet, capsule, suspension or solution, extended-release tablet, and orally disintegrating tablet. 2 It is also available as a suppository to use rectally. 2 Acetaminophen may also be used in combination with other medications to treat cough and cold symptoms. 2 Side effects may include redness or swelling, pain lasting for more than 10 days, or fever lasting more than 3 days. 2
